Winning poker requires a lot of skills and some luck. Poker players, be it beginners or professionals, have to deal with some mathematics when they play poker. Players who do not know the percentages of what might happen often deal with the situation based on their experience, well that may apply if to top levels who can really read their opponents.
Remember that knowing something about poker math would help a lot on the table. You might not be able to master it in one sitting but it should be a learning process throughout your poker career. Here are some terms and tips that may come useful to winning in some chips:
Outs
When you say “Out”, this refers to a card that will still be dealt and which can improve what you have or your hand. Let us say you have seen the flop. You have 2 cards and 3 other cards on the table. There are still 47 cards on the deck. Let us say 4 of the cards that you already know are spades, then this gives you 9 more spades on the remaining 47. Using this ratio, you can know the probability of how you can improve your hand and see how you should bet or raise.
Pot-Odds
It is essential to know if you are more likely to gain some chips or lose some chips in different poker scenarios. Let us say you need to put in $50 into a pot going $100 then the pot odds is 2-to-1. You need to bee on the right side of these odds to be profitable somehow. Generally, better than 2-to-1 is good, if not, then it might spell some chips going your opponents’way.
Expected Value
You will see this written as EV in most poker literature you will read. EV refers to the interplay of outs, odds, and tendencies of other players and how you will use them to make decisions during play. You might consider a 2-to-1 odd cause you have a 4-to-1 winning probability but this will only be for a short run since most of the time you will be on a losing end in similar situations.
